Pantone color of the year 2018: Ultra Violet
Pantone was created in 1950, in NY, to catalog and codify colors for the graphic industry. Only after it was used by the fashion industry and other industries. Besides the traditional catalog, new colors are released every year, depending on what people are trying to communicate. Fashion is communication, and colors are responsible for that impact. Not only because it reflect our personal characteristics such as color skin, but also color psychology, which transmit subliminal and unconscious messages.
On 2000, Pantone created the color of the year, which became their biggest marketing strategy. The color of the year is based on the “Zeitgeist”, or spirit of a time.
That said, there is a lot of research behind the color of the year.
Other fashion, decoration, and painting companies have their color of the year, however, Pantene is considered the biggest expert in colors. The color of 2017 was the green Greenery, which means reconnection with nature, restart, renovation, and also environmental awareness. This color is not only in fashion, but also in food, furniture and decoration. The release of a new color means that the interest for that color will increase, but does not mean that by January, everybody will be using Greenery.
The 2018 color was already chosen: Ultra Violet! But where is it from? Some people said it is from Hillary Clinton ‘s speech conceding the victory to Trump. The color in her blazer is a mix of red and blue, color of Democrats and Republicans, sending a message of union. As Li Edelkoort said, “She symbolized the union of two extremes, which is very wise, beautiful, and symbolic.
Besides that, this color represents the women, as feminist movements use this color in their community to fight for women’s equal rights, called Ultra Violet.
The lilac also is a mix of Rose and Blue, Pantone’s 2016 colors that symbolized the gender situation worldwide. The color was also present in Starbucks’ unicorn drink, and people’s hair.
Moonlight and La La Land, Oscar’s biggest movies of the year, also had purple in their covers. The Ultra Violet can also have a relation with the 80’s, which was a very dramatic decade. Violet is considered the color of Royals, and Queen Elizabeth’s favorite color.
Lady Gaga is a current trendsetter that uses a lot of Violet.
Almost 20 months after Prince’s death, the Purple Rain has returned. Moreover, the violet has appeared in the Winter Collections of Christopher Kane, Carolina Herrera, Alberta Ferretti, Calvin Klein, Issey Miyake.
Pantone does a very important research to release the 12 main colors used by designers on the September edition of NYFW. This year’s list was more colorful, with Yellow, Red, and three types of Purple. It’s important to notice how designers are connected with the collective unconscious by the colors of their clothes
